Position Overview


The Investment Associate position is a unique opportunity to work directly with senior management in a small, flat investment organization that has generated strong long-term returns for its constituents. The primary responsibilities of the Investment Associate include:

• Work as an integral member of the investment team to research investment themes and conduct external manager due diligence. Prepare and present investment recommendations alongside senior staff.

• Source and track new opportunities with external investment managers.

• Analyze and monitor existing portfolio holdings. Assess current opportunities and risks of various investment strategies across public and private markets.

• Train and mentor junior staff members.

• Develop market commentaries and presentation materials for various constituents.

• Complete special projects as directed by senior management.

Position Requirements

• Undergraduate degree and excellent academic credentials. Degree in finance, economics, math or engineering disciplines.

• 2-5 years of professional, related investment work experience. Investment management or capital markets experience, with background in public equity, fixed income, credit or derivatives strongly preferred.

• Outstanding analytical and communication skills (written and verbal)

• Motivated, self-starter with a strong work ethic

• Demonstrated passion for investing and investment markets

• Affinity for UVA or Charlottesville area a plus

UVIMCO’s Investment Analyst program is 2 years in length and provides exposure to the full breadth of asset classes and strategies in UVIMCO’s global opportunity set. Additionally, UVIMCO sponsors each Analyst to complete the CFA designation during his or her time in the program.

Investment Analysts work directly with UVIMCO investment team and senior management to select specific investments in public equity, private equity, hedge funds, real estate and resources. In this role, Investment Analysts learn how to evaluate both individual investment transactions and broader market opportunities, while also gaining exposure to some of the top investment management firms in the world as they invest capital on behalf of the University. Investment Analysts participate in the due diligence and monitoring of the external investment firms through which UVIMCO’s strategies are generally implemented, and conduct research on various companies, properties, and industries within both developed and emerging markets.

The Associate position is a unique opportunity to join a dynamic organization that utilizes world-class investment strategies to further the mission of one of the most prestigious public institutions of higher education in the country.

The Associate position is an opportunity to work directly with senior management in a small, flat, investment organization. The primary areas of focus for this position will be the risk reporting process, risk system design and management, and the execution of various risk-related strategic initiatives. The Associate will report to the Chief Operating Officer. Primary areas of responsibility include:

1. Work collaboratively with the team to help generate attractive long-term real returns for the Long Term Pool while remaining within the risk tolerance of the University. Participate as a member of the Risk and Investment Committees;

2. Lead the development of UVIMCO’s data management and risk management systems;

3. Lead all risk reporting efforts. Utilize the risk management system for risk and exposure reporting, risk management, and providing custom analytics. Measure and manage market, liquidity and manager risks, and assess the risk tolerance of the University;

4. Improve existing or develop new methodologies for risk measurement, risk management, and asset allocation models, including custom analytics;

5. Provide quantitative analyses to support investment recommendations, including attribution analyses;

6. Work collaboratively with the Associate of Investment Strategy and Risk to support all strategic research efforts;

7. Assist in the management of UVIMCO’s derivatives overlay program;

8. Provide quantitative support to the CIO, Risk Committee, and other Investment Staff for research projects; and

9. Recruit, supervise and develop investment associates and analysts.

Position Requirements

The candidate must be a motivated self-starter and possess strong organizational skills, a strong work ethic, attention to detail, and a high level of professionalism and integrity. Successful candidates will have a strong technical finance background as well as experience with or the demonstrated desire to learn R, SQL, and Python. Demonstrated completion of successful programming projects is required.

Additionally, the candidate should have:

• An undergraduate and/or graduate degree from a top institution in a quantitative discipline such as Statistics, Economics, Physics, Engineering, Finance, Computer Science or Operations Research.

• CFA Charterholder or demonstrated interest in pursuing the CFA Program.

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

• Demonstrated ability to work effectively on an independent basis as well as in a collaborative team environment.

• At least three years of experience in quantitative finance, preferably involved with the portfolio management of endowments or other institutional investors.

Flexible in a fast-paced environment with evolving reporting requirements and job responsibilities. Possess excellent verbal and written communication skills and able to quickly learn new technology. Additionally, the candidate should have:

• Undergraduate degree with an emphasis in accounting, business administration, or finance and one year related professional work experience, or equivalent combination of college education and professional experience are required.

• Proficiency in accounting and reporting software and Microsoft Office, including strong Excel skills (required)

The Human Resources Manager will be responsible for managing all aspects of Human Resources at UVIMCO including recruitment, onboarding, performance management and development, benefits and compensation, employee relations, payroll, terminations, and special projects. 6. Develops and maintains job descriptions and compensation benchmarking for all UVIMCO positions.

7. Oversees the completion of annual performance appraisals by the management staff. Participates in compensation surveys, develops new wage scales as necessary and develops new position descriptions.

8. Resolves employee relations issues to include conflict resolution, harassment investigations, wage complaints, employee disputes, attendance issues and general questions.

9. Develops and monitors overall HR strategies and procedures across the organization. Ensures legal compliance throughout human resource management.

10. Manages process for H1-B applications and all other immigration matters.

11. Completes special projects and other duties as assigned.

Position Requirements

The successful candidate has demonstrated competence in recruiting and other HR functional areas in the investment management industry, a high level of financial and business acumen, verbal and written communication skills, and relationship management skills. The ability to make administrative and procedural decisions and judgments on sensitive, confidential issues is required. Must be detail oriented, have strong analytical and critical thinking skills and the ability to manage multiple activities accurately and effectively. Must be highly flexible in a fast-paced environment with evolving reporting requirements and job responsibilities. Influences and interacts effectively with all levels of the organization. UVIMCO employees exhibit integrity, initiative, and the capacity to work independently.

Additionally, the candidate should have:

• An undergraduate degree with an emphasis in human resources, business administration or a related field, and 7 - 10 years progressive experience in a Human Resources environment.

• Proficiency in Microsoft Office required. Experience with HRIS/applicant tracking systems preferred; experience with ADP Workforce Now a plus.

• Operational knowledge of payroll policies, regulations and procedures and a working knowledge of benefit plans, insurance and retirement policies, regulations and procedures are required.

• Experience with immigration applications is preferred.

• Professional designation, such as PHR, SPHR or progress towards preferred.
